Picture Manager tools not working

P

Patti

On my new computer, I got Office Small Business edition. It came with a
trial version of professional. Picture manager comes with the small business
edition, but when the trial version of the professional expired, the tools
became in operable in picture manager. When the program opens, I get a pop
up box that tells me to upgrade to professional to use Access. I don't want
Access, just picture manager. I tried to reinstall Picture manager thru
Add/Remove programs to get the tools back, but it won't work. I can still
open pictures with the program, but am not allowed to edit them. Can anyone
help me fix this?
Thanks,

H

You need to completely uninstall the trial version of Office Professional.
Then you should be able to install (if they're missing) the missing
components from Small Business Edition.

I looked for a listing for the trial version of professional and could not
find it. I uninstalled Access, which is in the trial version, and that didn't
work. I went to Remove programs and couldn't find anything even after going
through the listing of every option to install or uninstall. How do I
uninstall the trial version of office pro?
Thanks,
Patti

Since yours is a new computer, would I be correct in assuming that you're
running Vista? If so, in Control Panel > Programs and Features, type
"office" into the Search box at the top right corner. There should be
distinct listings for each major Office version or independent Office
application that's installed. Here, for example, I have (among others):

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003

Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007

Sometimes the names are hard to see, so you might want to expand the Name
field at the top so you can see the entire name. If my "theory" is correct,
you very likely have two copies of Picture Manager installed, and you're
trying to run the one from the trial version of Office.

Yes, I'm running Vista. The search came back with
2007 Microsoft Office System
2007 Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assemblies
Microsoft Office Small Business Connectivity components

I searchd for Picture Manager, Office Professional, trial version, and other
combinations of terms with no results returned. I'm not having much luck
with the uninstall of the trial version. What should I try next?

The executable for Picture Manager is OIS.EXE, usually located in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office12. I'm assuming that you have only one copy of
OIS.EXE, and that another copy is not holed up somewhere else on your hard
drive.

I would try removing Picture Manager, rebooting Windows, then reinstalling
it. This, on the theory that when you installed SBE, installation saw the
existing OIS.EXE and left it, rather than dumping it and installing the
version from SBE.

In Programs and Features, click on 2007 Microsoft Office System, then click
on Change. Choose Add or Remove Features, then click Continue.

Expand Office Tools, and set Microsoft Office Picture Manager to Not
Available.

Click Continue, and follow the prompts to complete removing MOPM.

Reboot. The repeat the procedure, setting MOPM to Run from My Computer.

Cross your fingers. And see if it works now.

If it does... be alert for the possibility that installation might've
screwed up other components as well. If it were my computer and discovered
other screwed-up components, I would completely remove SBE, reboot, and
reinstall. (Windows will remember your activation information -- at least it
does here.)

I searched for the OIS.EXE file and found only 1 copy of it. Then I removed
Picture manager and reinstalled it. There was no change. One of the first
things I did before posting here was to completely uninstall Office and
reinstall. Unfortunately, it remembered that there was that stupid trial
version hanging around. Any other ideas??? BTW, typing with my fingers
crossed was tough! :) It's my sense of humor keeping me from fixing this
whole thing with a large sledge hammer!

Thanks,
Patti

What happens if you uninstall the trial version?

That was the original idea, but I can't find the trial version to remove. I
bought the SBE and it came with a trial version of Professional. Do you have
any idea how I can find the trial version? I've searched all kinds of things
looking for it.

Hooray !!! Microsoft has finally fixed this problem.

They have created a workaround which requires you to overwrite two of the
Office 2007 files with a new file.

You can get the new file and instructions via email from:

***UPDATE***

Please do not send an email to the technician listed in my previous
email...he is being deluged with requests and MS is missing the vital step of
collecting some basic data from you.

Please call 800-936-5700 and ask for the PowerPoint Support Team after your
case has been created.

Thanks.
