Picture Manager

A friend has a new computer that came with Office 2003. (I have that
version also) When she tries to open an attached photo, instead of opening
in Picture Manager (as mine does), hers opens in Windows Picture & Fax
Viewer. How can she change that to open in Picture Manager?

Picture Manager is not installed by default. Go to Add/remove programs in
Control Panel, choose MS Office, Change, Add Features or Programs, and select
Office Tools, Picture Mgr, Run from my computer. You might look through all
the other features & addons that are not installed by default to see what you
could use. Office takes up too much space if everything is installed.

Right-click the image, properties, opens with... click change, high-light Microsoft
Office Picture Manager, click ok...

Mary,

Two questions. First of all re: the following you wrote (below) when I
wanted to make sure she has Picture Manager, I had her go to
Start-Programs-MS Office to see what all she has; and then she found Picture
Manager under Tools. Is that not an indication that she has it; or is it
just showing what's available?

Second, re: your next reply (Right-click the image, properties, opens
with... click change, high-light Microsoft Office Picture Manager, click
ok...)

I tried this with photos I've received myself and wasn't sure WHERE you
click the image - the image itself in the body of the e-mail, or the image
in the Attach line of the e-mail, or the image after it's opened in whatever
program (in my case PIcture Manager) ? Anyhow, I tried all 3 places, and
in none of them did I get a Properties option in the right-click menu.
Well, I did in Picture Manager, but that only opened up a Properties panel
on the right hand side, with no "opens with" option.

As one of the previous posts suggests, if Microsoft Office Picture Manager
is not installed, run the Add or Remove Programs (or Add/Remove Programs on
Windows 2000) from the Control Panel in Windows. Wait for the list to build
(may take a while). Find "Microsoft Office _ Edition 2003" (where "_" is the
edition you have - i.e. Standard) and click the "Change" button. When the
Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog appears, choose "Add or Remove Features"
and click "Next >". In the next screen, check the box which states "Choose
advanced customization of applications." The "Update" button will change to
"Next >" as you do this. Click "Next >" to get to the advanced customization
screen. There should be a "-" (minus) sign (inside a small box) to the left
of the item "Microsoft Office". This means that this item has been expanded
and it's sub components should now be visible. If it isn't, click on the "+"
(plus) sign to expand it. At the bottom of the list, find the item "Office
Tools" and expand it. Scroll down (if needed) and find "Microsoft Office
Picture Manager" and click on the hard drive icon which has an arrow
pointing down on it. In the menu which appears, select "Run from My
Computer". Click the "Update" button to continue. At this point, the
installer will add Microsoft Office Picture Manager to your computer.

If Microsoft Office Picture Manager is installed, run it (Start Menu ->
Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Microsoft Office
Picture Manager). From the menu bard, click "Tools", then "File Types...".

From here, you'll be able to select what file types Microsoft Office Picture
Manager will open under Windows Explorer when the image file is
double-clicked. Check the boxes for each image type which you would like
Microsoft Office Picture Manager to open and then click "OK".

Microsoft Office Picture Manager supports files that end in (have the
extension):
..jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif, .bmp, .dib, .png, .tif, .tiff, .wmf, .emf

Thanks, Paul. I'll try to reach my friend tomorrow to find out if it's
installed. I just thought since it showed up in Start-Programs-MS
Office-Tools-Picture Manager, that that was an indication that it was
installed. But maybe that only shows what's available? Anyhow, we'll try
when I can reach her, and I'll get back with you.

Hi Paul,

I just finished talking with my friend (worked with her over the phone).
She is/was able to OPEN Picture Manager by going to Start-Programs-MS
Office-Tools-Picture Manager. We even managed to Save As an e-mail
attached photo that showed up in Picture Manager. So I would definitely say
that it was already installed.

And to make sure that Picture Manager was chosen for .jpg's to open in (as
well as other extensions) we went to Folder Options and followed all those
steps. It DOES say "Opens with MS Picture Manager". So all would seem OK.
BUT - if she goes back to the e-mail and double clicks on the photo icon, it
SHOULD now open in Picture Manager, HOWEVER, it doesn't! It opens in
Windows Picture & Fax Viewer (still). What else can she do?
