Picture opening for edit in a new session

I use Word to view and edit documents within transcription
software. My word file is a template that contains
a .jpeg file. When I view my Word template, switch to
another screen within the transcription software, then
switch back to the Word screen, the .jpeg file opens in an
edit mode in a completely new Word session.

Can anyone explain why I am getting a new Word session in
edit mode?
