last time it was that I was updating the index file . Now I have no idea
what is happening. What happend to Publisher? It use to be great with
images, now if its not a red x, its a color block distorted mess.

http://www.joyceearly.com/index.html

you tell me what is happening. Both IE and firefox I've compressed images.
I've not overlaped images, I have even created many of the images in
publisher...

I need a fix once and for all or I will throw publisher away and never look
back! version 2003.

If you had followed my instructions the last time you had a problem with
images, you probably wouldn't have problems now. Go back and read my
instructions on the proper way to produce your web files..."Publish to the
Web" NOT "Save as a web page". I notice the site referenced in the thread
has the same problem.

With your attitude, I think moving to a different program is a great idea.
Color me done trying to help you.

Publish to the web not save as a web page? I'm doing passive ftp, how do I
do that? Your instructions lacked instructions. I'm using filezila. I
thought you said don't keep modifying the index page. That's what I thought
I was doing wrong. You said something about it not being and html editor. I
understood they just were not clear. So clearly as if I don't know what you
know. How do I publish passive ftp while using the publish to the web
option? Thanks you

I misunderstood your instructions. I thought the mistake I made was
modifying the index.hml file, I thought it was giving the extra code. You
said Publisher is not an HTML editor. So I was saving the file as an html
not opening the html and making changes. Now as I said before I publish
passive ftp and I use filezilla. When I choose publish to the web it
supports ftp? I just put in the ftp password then?

Publisher is not a web editor, and generally you do not edit the code with a
few exceptions. And you should never import the html code in order to edit
it as you were doing, and as you do with a web editor such as FrontPage,
Dreamweaver etc.

When you are ready to produce your web files File > Publish to the Web and
direct your output to your local computer, and probably a folder where you
can find it easily...probably just as you always have done. Then use
FileZilla to upload the index.htm file and the index_files folder.

When you Save as a web page in 2003, you produce "rich" html which is full
of Office tags and other code bloat. This option has been removed from 2007.
When you Publish to the Web you produce "filtered" code.

Make this fundamental change and see if your images work better.

I tried to publish to the web by hitting the earth button, open up my
network places and then put in the domain as ftp://domain.com. To put it
right on the ftp server, avoiding filezilla all together. 45 minutes later
the pub file is still working but no publishing. It looks like it opens IE.
Can you do me a favor, can you tell me the best way to publish passive FTP
using Publisher? Thanks!

What I was doing
opening pub file making changes, saving as index.html and then overwriting
the existing index.html and folder each time. This is wrong correct?

Read the post and thread:
"Publishing a web site by using ftp w/Publisher 2007 & Godaddy.com", from
Geri 2/9/09
Follow the links to the referenced articles and learn more about the proper
way to use Publisher and ftp uploading. I am sure that 1&1 also has articles
about FTP uploading you can reference.

I read this article but when trying to open the ftp location i get an error
that I have a firewall or need to change proxy settings. What i did was
selected publish to the web and saved the index.html file then used filezilla
to load on the sever. Of course it changed nothing. The images are still
pulverized. So my conclusion is to stop using Publisher and this won't
happen.

I'm not convinced it's all Publisher's fault.

When you saved the original images, did you choose Progressive jpg?

Can you post the original image somewhere we can look at it...like on Flickr
or something?

I'm so happy! I figured it out! For those who just want an answer and don't
want to read numerous articles that don't spell out exactly what to do here
it is.

From the article above it said, hit the publish to the web under File

From there a box pops open with the title Publish to the web right below it
its says Save In: Drop that to the very bottom where it says add modify FTP
locations.

In the box just type the domain, no need for ftp:/// in front just
mydomain.com

then select user and put in your ftp user name, and then password, and click
add. Close it

Now click on the publish to the web again but this select "My Network Places"

then type in the file name: at the bottom ftp://mydomain.com it opens up
the ftp location and will have your user id saved and you just have to add
the password.

Then it will open up the ftp location and you'll see your existing
index.html file and just click on it and save it will ovewrite the last one.

argue? I sense a large amount of hostility and that's unfortunate. I found
the answer and fixed my problem by finding an article and then playing with
it until I got it. It appears you like to tell people how stupid they are
rather than offer real solutions and that's OK because I found the answer in
spite of you. Your initial attempt to help wasn't at all clear and could
have meant a few things. I would bow out in the future unless you can tame
your hostility and actually take an attitude of helping rather than telling
people the y are stupid because they didn't understand your unclear ideas.

Perhaps you should use Ctrl + F5 and look
at the pages at http://www.joyceearly.com/index.html again. The pages and
graphics look fine to me in both IE7 and FF3.

Yes because if you'll note above I figured it out by reading the article I
posted and then playing with it until I got it. I also gave detailed
instructions as to what I did for anyone who actually needs help. So yes I
did fix it. Issue finally solved!

Opinions vary, but I will certainly will bow out of trying to help you any
more. It would obviously be a waste of time. Good luck.

Thanks for getting me on the right track! It was you who said the rich code
was the issue! Without your help I would not have been able to solve it!
