Pictures are invisible except during adjustment

When I insert or copy and paste or drag and drop a picture from anywhere,
they are invisible. All I can see are the lines. When I adjust the size, the
picture temporarily shows, but disappears as soon as I stop moving the
border. What can I do to stop this?

In the Options dialog, make sure the "Picture placeholders" option is
not checked.
