pictures are saved double, thereby enlarging the file size

It seems that every picture I added to my webpage is saved twice - once in
the resulution as shown (relatively small file size < 50kB), and once in the
original file size (> 1.5 MB). This has the effect that I can only upload the
first 2 pages as my provider allows only 20 MB storage. What can I do to
hinder publisher in saving the (not needed) original pictures to the
published website?

Don't create your thumbnail using the 1.5MB picture. Reduce it to 50kb
first (using a picture editor) and then use the 50kb picture to create the
thumbnail in Publisher.

Ronny,

Pub 2003 by design creates multiple copies of images with the goal of
providing the best image possible to the person viewing the site. As Rambus
suggested it is always a good idea to use an image editing application to
resample images to a web optimized size. But also Microsoft issued a patch
to help. Follow the link to 'Compress your graphics for a faster web site'
