pictures disappear in normal layout view

I'm using Microsoft Word 2003, and have a document with multiple pictures
in it. I notice that some of the pictures disappear when I'm in normal
layout view. Any suggestions?

I figured it out. the solution is to take away formatting of the picture.
right-click the picture > format picture > layout tab, select 'in line
with text'.
