Pictures disappearing from stationary

I created a letterhead stationary pad for myself. I've got it set up with
my logo in the header and address in the footer. The first page is
different. The second page has a combo logo and address and a text only
header. Today I clicked on my icon and got my standard piece of stationary
but, for some reason, the logo on the bottom of the first page has
disappeared. The other graphic elements, in the header and the second page
footer, remain.
The box the image was in is still there and can be high lighted. I tried
everything I could think of in order to be able to see it again, changing
layer orders, putting it in front of text (even though there isn't any text)
and nothing makes it reappear. If I go into the "Edit Picture" mode, the
image reappears but, instead of being a single image, it is tiled into four
strips, each sizeable, etc., but unconnected from each other. I found that
when I distorted one of the tiles to a tremendous degree, that tile
reappeared in the footer.
Just to get a letter out today, I tried just finding the original artwork
and copying the graphic into the footer. Then, when I went to print, you
could see the original image behind and offset from the one I just pasted
in.
Two questions. First, any thoughts on how I can repair this problem?
Second, does the graphic actually reside in the footer or is it a pointer to
the original artwork? The reason I ask is that this image not only
disappeared from the footer of my stationary, the same graphic disappeared
from the footer of my memo form!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Pete-

How about a little more insight on what we're working with:

Word version?
OS version?
System info?
Graphic file type (tiff, eps, png, pict, etc.)?

This often makes a great deal of difference |:>)

OK, I'm working on a Mac, dual 1G with 1.5G RAM, running system 10.3.7. The
software is Word 2004 for Mac, Version 11.1 (build 040910) part of Office.
The original logo and address graphic files were created in Photoshop and
flattened down to JPEGs. I pasted them into the original documents and may
have resized them a tiny bit once they were in position. I have been using
both my stationary and memo templates with no problem for several months
(though I don't use them often enough that I could say on this date the
graphic was there and on this date it was gone). Any other info that might
help?

Hi Pete-

Thanks for the info. Sorry to not get back sooner, but working for a
living really cramps my style sometimes.

Anyway... The first thing I'd suggest is that you try using the
Insert>Picture command rather than pasting or drag & drop for any
images. It's not unusual for a file to "forget" where the picture is
when these last two options are used. In the same vein, its a good
idea to keep the image file in the same location as when it was
inserted. Further, if you use the same image in several templates, use
the Insert command in each, rather than copying & pasting from one to
another.

Secondly, I've seen it posted that, unlike earlier versions, '04 stores
a full copy of the image rather than a low-res copy. I have not seen
any official material from M$ (and no disrespect for the poster) but
I'm still not convinced that there isn't a file size limit to what the
doc stores and still relies on the original for full fidelity. My
skepticism is based on having inserted a 2.8 MB tiff in a doc and
finding that the doc file size only increased by <300K>.

Hope this helps |:>)
