pictures do not display in document mode but OK in Preview why?

Working with word 2003, on Xp, inserting regular plain vanilla JPEG pictures
into a word document and then scolling up and down looses the picture.
Picture Placeholders is unchecked. Go to preview mode picture appears,
returning to document mode the picture may reappear or half reappear ~ view
is in Print Mode.
