Pictures do not show up in Word 2003, or after a long wait

This one is quite annoying. If I insert pictures in a Word document, close
the doc, and open it again later, the pictures will display very slowly, or
will not show up at all. Sometimes typing a character in the doc in the
neighborhood of a picture will make it appear.

How does this work ? Are pictures shown "last" ?
