pictures won't show up in Word

When I insert a picture into a Word document, it doesn't show up. I have
looked at the Options on the Tools menu and the option to view drawings is
selected. I also have view picture placeholders selected. The placeholders
show, but the pictures won't show up in any view, including print preview.
Every now and then when scrolling, the picture will show for a few seconds,
then disappear again. Why don't pictures show up and stay? I am using Word
2002.

You need to *clear* the check box for "Picture placeholders."

I cleared the check box and the pictures still didn't show up. I tried
reducing the hardware acceleration setting and the pictures show up now.
