Pictures Won't Show!

Hey Everyone,

I'm writting this on behalf of my mom, who is the one having these problems.
We both have been using Frontpage for many years, in her case since 98/99.
Never once have we seen a problem like this.

In several templates she has bought over the past while, images won't work.
Using the normal method to add them in (even tried copy-pasting), they show
up fine in Frontpage. They even save into the proper folders as normal.
However, when you preview in a browser (IE), they don't show. Instead you get
an inset box with the little icon at the top left corner that is 3 colored
shapes. (Can't remember what that means).

This even occurs in the buttons on one template. They show those errors, but
when you hover over them they appear okay?!?! It's really puzzling and
frustrating us both. I've had to recreate one of the templates from scratch,
which seemed to solve the problem..but that was such an inconvenience, we
don't want to have to do it for every template.

The templates that are causing these problems are bought from different
creators, too, so it doesn't seem to be specific to one. One of the templates
she bought and used successfully years ago, just rebought it today and is
experiencing this problem.

We've tried taking out all CSS and Java codes, to no avail. It's just weird.
If the image is already part of the site it works okay, but even if she just
opens that image to edit it and saves it in the EXACT same place and name, it
will suddenly disappear. Sometimes they show if you refresh it enough, but
then they will go away again.

Anyone have ANY idea what's going on here? We're doing nothing different,
and this problem started a month or two ago. Using Frontpage 2003 on Windows
XP, like we have been for years.

Thanks for your time, I hope I haven't left anything out.

Have you made you have a web/site open (File > Open > Site) and have you
tried importing the files/folders for the template/s used?

Open the web, File > Open > Web, then File > Import.....choose the file
and/or folder containing the template file. This will imort the files into
the web.

The issue with the images.....ensure that they are published to the same
equivalent location on the server as they are on your hard drive, i.e. same
path/folder name.

Also if you publish to a Linux Server, note that "picture.jpg" and
"Picture.jpg" or "PICTURE.jpg" or "Picture.JPG" are not considered the same
file by Linux. Make sure the 'case' of the file name matches.

Make them all lower case, this will save much confusion, time and effort
when troubleshooting. The image you refer to is "broken image" or "missing
image" representing exactly the problem you have.

If you publish the site, does this fix the problem? That is, is the problem
only occuring when previewing, rather than viewing the live site?

I'm sure you've probably tried all the above, but, I'd make a double-check
to be sure.

Thanks for your reply. :)

We've imported the site the way we always have, by actually working in the
template provided. Meaning we go to File, Open, Site and working within the
pre-created site. This includes all files. The files that come with the
sites/templates show okay..it's only when we edit them or add new ones.

We haven't actually tried uploading any of them, only viewing it on the
computer..but still, we don't have that problem with other sites we have and
view offline.

And it's not a linux server, so that should be okay (Plus all images are
lowercase). :)

When we check the page source, or the page HTML within Frontpage the image
url is pointing to the proper place where the image exists, and it works
within the program. For some reason it's only in the browser that it
disappears.

If you hotlink an image from online it shows okay, too.

How are you opening the image to change it, with what, and what changes are
you making?
If you're opening an RGB jpg in a CMYK color workspace (by mistake) then you
save it unknowingly as a CMYK jpg it will not work on the web.

Also, if you're using the same file name, you should re-import the image
file into FP and let it overwrite the old file.

For more help please post the URL to the webpage(s) with the problem.

When changing it, we were using Paint Shop Pro. However, should that effect
new images being put into the pages too? I mean like, inserting a new jpeg or
gif into a table on a page and saving it the normal way?

And we did re-import it. ;)

The sites that have this problem aren't online, they were in work stages on
the computer and never uploaded.

You need to delete the old image from the site & page and then re-import the new image and then
insert it on your page.
