I know this is probably a very basic question -and solution - but how do I
convert a picture in an oval or circular shape, making it more attractive
than the standard square or rectangle? Can I then put a border round it, and
if so how?

Many thanks from a real, live non-techno!

Word is not a graphics application, but you could insert (say) a circular
autoshape from the drawing toolbar and use your picture as a fill.

Thanks Graham,

I know I'm a lost cause but the autoshape just obliterates the picture with
its shape - however I format the picture! Introducing a text box doesn't
work either of course.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Place the autoshape FIRST then double click the shape > colours and lines >
fill > fill effects > picture > insert your picture.

Try the following:

First put the desired autoshape on screen and position/resize to suit.
Hover the cursor over the outline until the crossed arrows appear.
Click the right mouse button and select Format Autoshape.
Make sure the Colors and Lines tab at the top is selected.
Click the dropdown arrow to the right of the Color: box.
Select Fill Effects...
Click the picture tab at the top.
Click Select Picture... and browse for your desired picture.
Click Insert
Click OK
The border color and thickness can be defined by changing the "Colour:" and
"Weight:" of the Line.
Click on OK to see the result.

Hope this helps.

Hello Graham and Alan,

VERY many thanks! It worked!

The instructiions were so clear, even I could follow them. I'm sure I'll be
back here before too long.

Thanks again.

Although it worked, I would strongly suggest you use a graphics program to
do graphics editing.
