Pivot Table Can Not Add Field to Row

The Field (column on the work sheet) is text. It is "=left(A2,3)".
I have tried as a caluclated field. I tried Copy, Paste Special, Value.
I can use the field as a filter or column but not as a row.
"The field you are moving cannot be placed in the Pivot Table area."
