pivot table error

I keep getting "Cannot Group that Selection" error message when I try
grouping a field in a pivot table, I have seen this done and have examples of
it, but using the same data, I keep getting this error. I am using Excel 2002

Check for blank cells or dates (if that's what you are grouping) that are
being seen as text in the underlying data
