Pivot table Filter List

In pivot table when a particular level of a dimension is dragged and dropped in the row or column areas then only that level is displayed. But when i drag and drop one level of a dimension in filter fields area, the complete dimension is displayed with the complete hierarchy
E.g. Suppose i have a supplier dimension with Industry as top level and supplier as the second level. When the supplier level is dragged and dropped into filter fields area, the complete hierarchy is displayed
Is this default behaviour of the pivot table control and if yes then is there any work around for this
