Pivot table number formatting

My pivot table has the data all formatted as currency, without expanded
detail. When I expand the data and look at the detail, the broken down
detail has general number formatting. If I change the properties for each
column, it gives me currency like I want. However, if I
close the pivottable and reopen it, the detail is general number formatting
again. This is EXTREMELY annoying. Can anybody tell me what is happening
here?
