I would suspect that the dates are formatted in the source as text or that
there are spaces which Excel can't coerce to dates. Go to your source data
and check they are truly dates with no spaces in the fields

I can't manage to amalgamate date entries into my pivot table by month
I tried the group option but it simply put the entries into random groups.

Excel doesn't have adequate datatype validation.

use a tool with real datatype validation.. like a database for example
