Pivot Tables - Date Filters

What condition will cause the Date Filter to not be available in a Pivot Table?
I have multiple pivot tables using one source (possibly different ranges,
but all including dates). One or two pivot tables are able to use the Date
Filter on Row Labels and others the Date Filter option is grayed out and only
Top Ten under Value Filters is available. The date columns appear to be in
the default date format. Thanks
