pivot w/ a different workbook as data source - odd behavior

I have a pivot report in an excel workbook, which references another excel
workbook as its data source using an excel odbc driver.

When I refresh the pivot, the other workbook (the data source) opens and
displays a popup message that the file is now ready for editing. The popup
has two buttons, Read-Write or Cancel. Typically clicking either of these
buttons causes Excel to hang/freeze. Why is the data source file opening and
how can I prevent it?

Thanks,
gt
