pj corr log

When opening documents in Word, the screen flashes and it seems to be
creating 3-4 blank documents, then they disappear and my original document
opens. By the end of the day, my new documents are numbered around 100, when
I really only had a few new documents. During the flashing I can make out "pj
corr log", which disappears very quickly.

This has been happening for 2 days. One week ago we started using a newer
version of Word on one workstation, and we downloaded the compatibility pack.
Not sure if this is affecting it or not.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like an add-in or an automatic macro of some kind is firing or misfiring... either that, or a virus is intervening, in which case you're going to need to scan your system and remove any viruses you encounter.

First, start Word in Safe mode to see if this stops the problem from occurring. This will tell you if the problem is due to something easily fixed or if there is a deeper underlying problem. To start in safe mode, hold the Ctrl key when you start Word, then click Yes to the safe mode prompt.

If the problem goes away in safe mode, then the cause most likely is an add-in or automatic macro (which might have been added to Normal.dot by an add-in).

Assuming you're using Word 2003, choose Tools - Templates and Add-ins, and see what's listed. If nothing is listed there, you'll probably need to add the COM Add-Ins tool to the toolbar or menu to proceed. From Word 2003's Help file:

1.. If you have already added the COM Add-Ins command to the Tools menu, skip to Step 6.
2.. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
3.. In the Categories box, click Tools.
4.. Drag COM Add-Ins from the Commands box over the Tools menu. When the Tools menu displays the menu commands, point to the location where you want the COM Add-Ins command to appear on the menu, and then release the mouse button.
5.. Click Close.
6.. On the Tools menu, click COM Add-Ins and do any of the following:
a.. To load an add-in, select the check box next to the add-in name in the Add-Ins available list. If the add-in you want isn't in the Add-Ins available list, click Add, locate the add-in, and then click OK.

b.. To unload an add-in from memory but keep its name in the list, clear the check box next to the add-in name.

c.. To remove an add-in from the list and also from the list of registered add-ins in the registry file, select its name, and then click Remove.

Safe Mode stops the problem. I looked in Templates and Add-Ins and there IS a
line under Global Templates and Add-Ins that says pjcorrlog. It is not
checkmarked. However, the delete button is greyed out, only Add is available.
Checkmarking that item or double-clicking on it doesn't make any difference.
