place foot/endnotes in single column format in double column doc?

Have a double column layout in Word and the client wants either a) footnotes
in single column layout at bottom of page; or b) endnotes at end of doc or
section in single column format. note end of doc is not option as there are
several sections and back cover that fall after Notes section. any work
arounds? thanks!
