Place markers for 'enter,' spaces, etc

Hey, I'm new to this place and I'm not sure where to put this, but
here it goes:

I have Microsoft Word 2002. In my word documents, when I press
space, tab, or Enter, a dot (when I press spacebar), an arrow pointing
towards the right (when I press tab), or an arrow coming downwards and
then pointing towards the left (when I press enter), appears. These
symbols act as 'place holders.' Although I can still use Microsoft
Word, these 'place holders' are very distracting. Could anyone help
me get rid of these 'place holders,' so I can see JUST text on word
documents? I apologize in advance -- I'm sure this is a dumb
question.

Thank you

On the toolbar, press the Show/Hide Formatting button (Looks like a
backwards capital P - the paragraph symbol)
