planning my database structure

R

Reesey

I am a medium user--I have never built a complicated database from scratch. I have always modified ones built for me or never got past simple on my own. I am going to be be building one and want to show my planned structure ahead of time to my team. Does anyone have a cool excel templete that will allow me to type in my tables and field, denote relationships I plan to me and have this templete graph it out for me ? Or does anyone have a clue what I am trying to ask for and can steer me in right direction???

Hi Reesey,

By the time you're done inputting your tables, fields names in excel or
anything else for that matter you could've accomplished the same thing with
Access itself. Simply create the tables, fields, primary keys, indices, etc.
Build the table relationships. Once you're done, you can use the Documenter
to print your table/field structure, and print the relationship structure.
Access can not print the relationship structure (at least the earlier
versions), but you can copy and paste the screen image to a Word, or Wordpad
for printing.

I've done this many times to come up with a "prototype" of an app that I'm
going to build.

I didnt even know that feature existed until you sent me looking for it --very cool
What I was looking for though was a charting type tool--so that it would look like the relationship page in access but with it being an excel templete I would be able to move fields within the data page and see the organization in the chart...

Normally, I use Visio 2000 for this purpose, but I have a "template" for
Powerpoint that has objects pre-made to do ER Diagramming. You could copy
these objects into Excel if you wanted. One of the nice things about both
Excel and Powerpoint, is that you can connect the boxes with dynamic
connectors. See the Drawing Toolbar.

You can download this template from my class website here:

Look for ER Master under Week 4.

Actually, Stan Leszynski has several great documents and tools in his book
Access 97 Expert Solutions.
