Play audio on webpage

I would like to include selectable audio files on my webpage, but I don't
want the user to be taken to a new page - I want the player to play on the
same page. Is it a "pop up" application or something? I don't have any idea
how to make this happen.

In the past, I have put a button for the audiofiles and made them
hyperlinks. I don't like this solution.
