Playing movies in PP

I'm creating a movie in Premiere and want to play it in PP 2003, but
I'm having trouble finding a codec that will play. I've tried
Quicktime, Mpeg1, Mpeg2. None will play correctly in PP when I just
try and insert a movie file. What do I need to use here?

Premiere is one of the applications that allow the users to define many of
the settings (size, color depth, frames per second, etc..) While this is a
good thing under normal conditions, it can also cause fits in Powerpoint.
The best advice is to do some reading and get a solid understanding of the
standards for whatever file format you decide to use and then follow them
closely.

This is especially important if you plan to distribute your presentation to
other PCs. In such a case you need to make certain the codec and file
format are "main stream" standards that will be on most machines.

If you like, I've built and add in that fully automates that process. You
can download the trial version and see if it meets your needs.

I tried using your software but it's still not working. The audio will
play but there's no picture. At this point I don't care which codec I
have to use or how big the file is. It won't be distributed, so that
doesn't matter.....I just want something that will work!

I tried using Cinepak with Quicktime, is that what you're talking
about? Can I use Cinepak with another format? Also, that tutorial
looks like it was written in 2000....there's a lot more codecs out
there now.....

Have you tried exporting/saving the file to the WMV format? If not I'd
suggest trying that. If that fails to work in PPT please holler back.

It sounds (no pun intended) that something has hijacked some of your system
media settings. Let's start with the basics, what version of PowerPoint and
what version of Windows are you using? What other multimedia software do
you have installed on the machine?

PowerPoint 2003
Windows XP Home
It's a Dell laptop that came with all the Dell media software on it. I
also have the basics, like Real Media, WMP, and Quicktime loaded.

That was my fear. (Real and QT like to change all sorts of system
settings.) The easiest solution is to update or reinstall Windows Media
Player. That should reset everything. Note: Real may not work properly
after doing this.

Something I just figured out.... On my desktop computer, which has 1G
RAM and 3.1Ghz processor, I can render to an Mpeg4 and it plays just
lovely in PP (I also have Real and QT loaded on my desktop). My
desktop is running PP XP, not 2003. But my laptop won't run it. Could
it be a memory/processor problem? Or maybe a PP version problem?

PPT and QT don't get along well. So no, I wasn't saying to use Cinepak with
QT. Try it on an AVI.

As for the tutorial being written in 2000, yeah, it was written quite some
time ago. But so what? If you read it, you'll understand that PPT relies on
the antiquated MCI Media Player. It hasn't been updated in some time, so it
doesn't necessarily know newer codecs from shinola.
