Playing video in PowerPoint presentation

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I have a powerpoint presentation that has videos/movies to play. when the screen comes up it should automatically play the video. the video does not play.

the videos all had a .mpe extention. I changed those to .mpeg extention and the video still does not play.

I can play the video through media player.

Please help.
