I'm trying to sort A-Z a list of words in Word 2000. I've sorted some stuff
before but this is not working. What is a field delimiter and a record
delimiter and how to use both?? Thanks much.

If each word in the list is in its own paragraph, you should be able to sort
using Table | Sort. Where are you finding the terms "field delimiter" and
"record delimiter"? These usually apply to mail merges.

A field delimiter is the character that separates columns in your list, often
a comma or tab character.
A record delimiter is the character that separates rows in your list,
usually Enter.

If this is suppose to be a single column of words, check to see that there
are no misplaced tabs that might be causing the confusion. The Show/Hide ¶
can help with this.
