Please explain when and you use the five options in the Window pulldown-menu
after you click Arrange.

First, how does one open new windows so they completely cover already open
files rather than open somewhat lower? Does one to click on both "Windows
of Active Workbook" and "Horizontal"? Or is there another way to set a
preference?

What is the logic behind the several options, that is, for what
purposes/advantages would one wish to click on:

Tiled
Horizontal
Vertical
Cascade
Windows of Active Workbook

Hi Norman,

I find the "arrange" most useful when I have two workbooks open and I want
to move information back and forth between them. The feature arranges
windows on the screen.

Clicking the check box "Windows of Active Workbook" doesn't seem to do much
for me.

Windows of Active Workbook works well when you have multiple windows
for the same workbook (choose the Window/New Window menu command) -
it only arranges the windows from that workbook, ignoring any others
you have open.

I use it when I want to see more than one sheet of a single workbook
at a time.

There's no preference for setting your windows to open flush against
the toolbar, AFAIK, but I have a method using a Class event in the
Personal Macro Workbook. If you're interested, post a reply to this
message.

Windows of Active Workbook limits the arrangements to the active
workbook. If you have opened multiple windows (Window/New Window),
you can arrange them using this checkbox, otherwise, it doesn't have
any effect.

Tiled: XL apportions the screen into approximately equal portions
for each window, by first dividing the screen vertically, then each
pane horizontally. For instance three windows shows the activesheet
(when you chose Arrange...) in the left-hand pane full screen
height, half-width. The other two windows will be in the right
vertical half, divided horizontally.

Horizontal: All windows are apportioned horizontally, each window
gets 1/nth of the vertical space and full width.

Vertical: All windows are apportioned vertically - each window gets
1/nth of the horizontal space and full height.

Cascade: All windows are sized identically, but offset by
approximately the titlebar height vertically and the row header
horizontally.
