Please help! Can not indent in Project 2003 Professional!

K

Klamorris

I'm working in Project 2003 Professional and all of a sudden I am having
trouble with the indent feature. When I click the indent button, the task
moves out about 1 character space to the right, essentially not really
looking as if it has been indented. All of the tasks looks as if they're
still aligned to the left. Is there anyway to increase the indent spacing or
distance or fix this problem by changing a setting of some sort?

Oh and I already have SP3 installed.

Thanks in advance!!

I also have the correct settings (indent, shows summary tasks, etc.) checked
under Options/Views and its still not working.

Hello Klamorris,

Check Tools > Options, View tab. Under "Outline options for ....." is
Indent name checked?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Yes, everything under outline options on the view tab is checked, except
"show outline number".

Thanks for the information. It sound as though this is very recent?
Does it occur on all projects or just one. Have you tried closing the
file, exiting Project and trying again?

What view are you in when the indents don't work?

Thanks so much for responding by the way!!!
Yes, this just happened yesterday after I opened a project file that was
previously owned by someone else. I didn't realize it until a hour or so
later that something just wasn't quite right with the schedule view. I
thought that it may be a macro issue, but I do not see any unusual macros
associated with the file. Also, I'm not seeing any indentation on any of the
views (gantt or customized). I'm having this problem now with every project
file that I open, so I'm thinking my settings or something may have been
changed some kind of way....???..???

Are you working with Project Server?

If you suspect it may be a macro, try setting your security settings
(Tools > Options, Security, Macro Security to High) exit and restart
project. I am not familiar with a user definable setting that changes
the indent setting. (Most people are usually complaining it is too
big -- not too small).

K

Klamorris

It was already on high and i just set it to "very high" and it didn't correct
the problem. Under the options/collaboration tab I am set as "collaborate
using project server". When I change that to none, I still have the same
problem. This is so strange!!!

Okay, so its sounds as though you do not have a Project Server
installed and running.

I assume you are running virus protection? (Not that I think anyone
is writing viruses for project)

I also assume that when you click the indent button, it is actually
changing the outline level. Try inserting the outline level field in
a view. When you indent does it increase by one?

Try exiting project. Find the global.mpt file stored in your user's
directory. Rename it to something else. Restart project -- it should
create a new global file. Create a new project - any better?

Have you tried opening it on another machine? I saw this when I opened
Project files on a desktop machine in our conference room. It looks fine on
my machine, but always looks left justified on that other machine. I assumed
it was some setting on that machine, and didn't seek for an answer.

K

Klamorris

Yes, we're running anti virus protection and yes the outline level is
changing as I indent. I renamed the Global.mpt file, however when I open a
new project its still associated with the old Global.mpt file ( I can tell
because my custom views are still there) so nothing was reset. I can not seem
to find that partiualr file on my harddrive. What even more strange is that
the indentation is shown when I preview or print a file.
Am I not resetting the Global file correctly?

I'm not sure I follow -- how did you rename the global.mpt file if you
couldn't find it? Because the file is in a "hidden folder" you may
not be able to find it unless you search with that option (search
hidden folders) enabled. My installation (US English install) shows
the Global.mpt file at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Julie\Application Data\Microsoft\MS
Project\11\1033

After renaming the Global.MPT file in that directory (with MS Project
closed) re-start project and it should recreate Global. Any custom
views in existing projects will still be in those project files.

There have been two other posts in this newsgroup today about recent
unusual issues with Project 2003. I have asked the other posters to:
1. check with their IT departments to see if there has been a recent
change company wide
2. Check the control panel > Add or Remove programs. To see if there
have been any updates pushed lately. (you'll need to make sure the
option "Show Updates" is enabled).

When all else fails, you can try a Detect and Repair from the Help
menu in Project. NOTE: before you do -- make sure you have the
software installation disk available. You may need it.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I found the Global.mpt file using the search option just as you said. It was
found in the same folder that you have listed below. I renamed it and exited
the folder. When I opened a new project file, I was still having the same
problem. I then looked at the organizer and saw that my customized views
were still shown under Global.mpt, so its seems as if it did not reset.

The person who had the schedule before me created and ran macros and what
not in her files. When I open up her files I get a Visual Basic error saying
that the file was not found. I think this might be the problem, however all
of the macros listed are the standard MS Project macros.

I think I'm going to try the detect and repair option or possibly
reinstalling project. I just need to get a copy of the software.

Thanks again!!

Hi,

Thanks for the additional information. Let us know how a detect and
repair or reinstall work.

Good luck.
