You didn't mention the version of Word you're using but two leading cause of document corruption are
- using 'Allow Fast Saves' in Tools=>Options=>Save
and
- working directly to a removable disk with Word documents (if you need to do so, as a minimum set the choice in Tools=>Options on
for
[x] Make a local copy...)

Are you using File=>Open from inside Word and is the File Type in that dialog showing only 'Word documents' as the file type? If
not, change that then retry. You may also want to first turn on the choice for [x] Confirm Conversions at Open
in Tools=>options=>General
to see if Word 'thinks' the document being opened is a valid Word document.

If you are trying to open the file from the removable disc, try first copying it to your hard drive and then using File=>Open.

PLEASE HELP FAST files wont come up

Thank you for tring to help . I checked the 'Allow Fast Saves" and that was
not the problem. I have microsoft word that I bought 2 years ago. I also
tried the 'Comfirm Conversions at the Open" and I still get Microsoft
Pictures and Fax. Do you have any other sugestions because this is just to
weird that all of a sudden I can't open even my old files that I have had no
problems with before now.

I thought I was comunicatiing with people smart enough that I didn't need to
do all that. Have you ever heard that if you don't have anything nice to say
to someone don't say it at all. I recieved A's in my grammer classes thank
you very much

From Start, Run type in

winword /r

and press enter. This should reregister Word and correctly open the
documents again.

Thank you for tring but it didn't work. It came up that it experienced an
error trying to open. It said to check file permissions for the document or
drive. Don't know what that means. It also suggested to open the file with
the text recovery converter. If the computer didn't come with this installed
I don't have one. Do you have any other suggestions.

Good, so please use the knowledge. The whole purpose of using good grammar
is not just to satisfy grumpy old men like me, but to make text easy to
read.

When you read dozens, sometimes hundreds of posts every day, seeing
questions in all caps or without any punctuation makes it very difficult to
read.

This isn't a myth made up by grumpy old men but science. From a very early
age, the eye is trained to recognize the shapes of words. When the eye first
scans text, it doesn't look at individual letters but rather the shape of
the words and most of the time they eye/brain recognizes the word and moves
on.

If you look at two simple but similar words, example 'that' and 'this', the
eye will distinguish them immediately without the need to look and analyze
individual letters. But if they are written in capitals, 'THIS' and 'THAT'
the eye has to look at each individual letter because the words have no
shape.

Similarly, sentence construction and white space is equally as important for
the eye/brain. So the extra microseconds it takes to add punctuation or use
the shift key to capitalize a letter makes life easier for everyone.

It sounds as though the document may be corrupted beyond repair. What it is
suggesting is the Open and Recovery option. If you open Word, then use File,
Open, select the document and then click on the little down arrow attached
to the OPEN button, one of the options is Open and Repair. This presumes you
are using Word 2003 or Word 2007 though.
