please help me turn off automatic capitalization

Klytaimestra

My copy of Office 2004 on my home machine, which I just installed, has
(I assume) copied all of the preferences from my old Office X. But
it insists on capitalizing Every Single First Word In Every Table I
Produce.

I have gone to "autocorrect" and unclicked every single checkbox under
every single tab. There is not a single checkbox with a check still
in it under "Autoformat", "Autocorrect", "Autoformat as you Type", and
whatever the fourth one is; they're all gone. But still it's
capitalizing Absolutely Everything. And I have to waste enormous
amounts of time going back and uncapitalizing Everything.

Is there a solution for this? Or should I just shoot Office 2004,
swallow the money, and go back to Office X? Or does Office X do the
same thing (this is the first time in awhile that I've tried to do a
table)? IN which case, I don't know, Nisus Writer is beginning to
look like an option ...

please help,

K

The trick is to make a table and start typing such that Word auto-capitalizes
for you. When it does this, you get a very small "smart button" underneath
the effected word (they are called "smart buttons" because you have to be
really smart to notice them and know what the heck they mean).
Click on the button, and there is your hidden "preference"

As Matt Neuberg notes, there is no way to re-enable this once you turn it
off. (Thank goodness!)

My theory is that they put these in to distract you from noticing the slower
rendering. I'm pretty split on whether I want to use Word X or 2004.

Tools>Autocorrect>Capitalise first letter of sentences.

Turn it on or off as you wish.

I think he had already hit this preference...

The auto-capitalization in tables seems to be a separate preference that
isn't as readily accessible.

Right. Turning this off with the smart button (and the business about
turning it back on) is explained in the second volume of the new Take
Control ebook we just published. m.

Yeah, he did. I had a brain-fade there (thanks Beth for emailing me...)

I was wrong: there is only one place you can turn off Auto Capitalisation in
Tables (from the user interface) and that's with the Smart Button.
