Please help: Select Entourage Calendar...database daemon takes100% of cpu and Entourage freezes

K

Ken Rosenfeld

Running Entourage 11.3.6 (fully updated). When I select the calendar (or
projects), first just the date (October 2007) paints on screen - and then
the app hangs. The database daemon maxes the CPU. Entourage is frozen, and I
have to quit the daemon from the Activity Monitor.

If I don't select the calendar, email works fine (and notes and tasks).

Running Mac OS10.4.10

Rebooting doesn't help.
Disabling notifications and all sync services does not help.
Database Utility reports no problems with the database.

Help!!!!

Leading up to the problem, I was trying to newly sync my iCal to Entourage.
I had just labeled all the events I wanted in Entourage to the Entourage
"category" in iCal. And I turned on Sync Services for iCal inside of
Entourage.

Also, just recently added a MS Exchange email account, although this problem
did not occur right after this.

Welcome any help. Thanks!

- Ken

Hi Ken!

Which calendar are you accessing when this happens? A local calendar or
the Exchange calendar? If Exchange then use the Entourage menu -->
Switch Identity... command to set up a test identity that connects to
your Exchange Server. Does the problem follow after a full sync? If so,
then you most likely have a corrupt event causing the problem. You will
probably have to use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to delete the event once
you can determine which one it might be.

If the problem does not follow then try disabling syncing in your old
Entourage identity for about 10 minutes. Then re-enable syncing. I
suggest you choose either Entourage or iCal as your calendar to write
over all events in the other calendar. I don't suggest merging.

Hope this helps!

Bill - really appreciate the help. Let me describe further, because I am not
sure I can implement your suggestions.

I have 3 email accounts set up in Entourage (personal POP mail, original
work POP acct, and a new work Exchange account). The problem I get is
immediately when I select the Calendar icon (upper left of the Entourage
screen). I do not have a choice which Calendar to choose, but I am thinking
it is going to my local calendar.

My OWA calendar only has a two entries...ones I moved from my local
Entourage calendar to test my new Exchange account.

What I was trying to do was to take my iCal events (I had been using iCal,
and now with Exchange want to use my Exchange calendar), and move those
events into my Entourage calendar (local or Exchange...I figured I could
copy events from the local Calendar to the Exchange Calendar manually if I
needed to).

To do the move from iCal to my Entourage calendar, I selected the Calendar
sync from Entourage sync services, and asked it to merge (oops...too late
for your advice from below). In looking in OWA, it doesn't look like any
events made it over.

I have sync services turned off now, and turned off notifications, but still
get the freeze described below.

As a possible contributor to this, I run Spanning Sync to sync my Google
calendar to iCal. I will be getting rid of this now that we are on Exchange.

Regarding creating a new Identity...I am unclear on what to do (as I have
not created new identities before.) I assume from what you wrote that I
could create a test Identity...can you create this with the same Exchange
account info? When you mention syncing, do you mean between the Exchange
server and Entourage? Or between the original and newly created identity? If
there is some other "sync" beyond the two I know about (i.e., "Sync
Services" and syncing with Exchange or a POP server), where would I find it?
Sorry for all the questions.

Hi Ken!

That keeps the problem simplistic. Good to know.
What I was trying to do was to take my iCal events (I had been using iCal,

Indeed. You can also choose to sync iCal with any single calendar in
Entourage (your local calendar or your Exchange calendar). Some folks
like to have both and will copy between the local and Exchange calendars
to keep them "synchronized".
To do the move from iCal to my Entourage calendar, I selected the Calendar
sync from Entourage sync services, and asked it to merge (oops...too late
for your advice from below). In looking in OWA, it doesn't look like any
events made it over.

I only suggest not to use merge just to keep extra variables out of the
mix. I'm a firm believer in having just one place to trust and then
syncing everything from that one place. In my case, I "trust" Entourage
and it is the only place where I make changes. Everything else gets its
information from Entourage.
I have sync services turned off now, and turned off notifications, but still
get the freeze described below.

As a possible contributor to this, I run Spanning Sync to sync my Google

Probably not the culprit.

not created new identities before.) I assume from what you wrote that I
could create a test Identity...can you create this with the same Exchange
account info? When you mention syncing, do you mean between the Exchange

Sorry for all the questions.

Creating a new identity simply means you're starting Entourage from
scratch (no accounts, no data) but preserving your old information
separately just in case you want to return to it. This helps rule out
whether or not corruption is affecting your current identity.

In Entourage select Switch Identity... from the Entourage menu and
create a new identity. Note that your current identity is probably
called "Main Identity" and you can switch back to this any time you wish.

In your new identity set up just your Exchange account. Since it's an
Exchange account it will sync with your Exchange Server (it doesn't
download and delete like your POP account). Then enable syncing with
iCal. If everything works correctly then you can probably ascertain that
your old identity has some level of corruption. You can try a rebuild or
advanced rebuild using the database utility but if that still fails then
you may want to consider exporting your mail to an archive file from
your old identity, switching to your new identity and importing. It's
time consuming, depending on the amount of data you have, but once
complete then your problem is removed.

Hope this helps!

Hey Ken -- Did you solve this problem? I'm having the same issue (just
started today after Entourage told me something was wrong and it
rebuilt my database).

However, I've tried creating a new identity completely and I still
freeze every time I click on the Calendar.

Any thoughts??
