Please Help with Project Pro Updates!!!!

P

Here is the situation.

Updates has not worked yet.

In PWA --
Customize PWA is set to: % work complete
Customize views: % work complete has been added to timesheet

In Project Pro --
I have set Tools --> Options to:
Calculation: Auto Calculate, Updating task status updates resouces
status
Collaborate: Start, Finish, % Complete or outline changes

Also, have set Tools --> Customize to:
Published Fields: % work complete

When I log as a Team Lead to update a task, I can change the
percentage. I then click update, and get a prompt that it has been sent
to PM.

I log on as PM, and go to Updates tab. I see the (correct) percentage
changes. I go to accept, and Project Pro automatically opens. In the
schedule, the percentage changes are not reflected!!!

It directs me to the PM PWA and says the updates have been made, and
the Updates page is now empty.

I then logged back in at Team Lead and the changes have not been
accepted.

I've been reading all the communication of this topic and have yet to
find a solution. Please Please help. Thanks so much, in advance.

Could you answer a couple quick questions and we will try to help:

1. Are you unable to process task updates for this project only or all
projects?
2. Do you see Project Server errors in the server's application Event log?
3. After you accept the update, do you click Collaborate - Publish - All
Information to publish the latest schedule changes?

Also, you do not need to add the % Work Complete field to the list of
Published fields in Microsoft Project Professional, as % Work Complete is a
default Published field. Also, the % Work Complete field should have ready
been present in the PWA timesheet by default, so I'm not sure why you
thought you needed to add it (unless you had previously removed it at some
point).

Let us know.

Dale,

1. all projects
2. I dont' see any errors
3. I do publish - all info, and i've tried republish too
4. I think I took % complete in PWA off at one point.

Wow, now I'm stumped. Out of curiosity, are the tasks assigned to human
resources that are in your Enterprise Resource Pool? You didn't type the
names of resources in the Resource Sheet view of each project, did you? Let
us know.

P

pauline.tran

No, the resources were added via the Resources tab. I opened the list
via project pro, put in the resource information, and saved. When I
build a resource list, the names can be viewed in project pro -- so i
don't think that's the issue.

I've been really thinking about this and I think this is my issue --
when I update the % work complete via PWA, the information is being
saved to the database, but the information is not being exported to
Project Pro. If I'm in Project Pro and update % work complete, publish
all information, the changes I made are sent to PWA, therefore
overriding any changes that were made in PWA.

So -- from my diagnosis, I truly believe it's an issue with the
connection between the database exporting information out, not in. If
that makes sense. I don't know enough about the back end information
though.

Is there a particular way that I need to include my % work complete
column? when I open a new project in project pro, I always have to you
to insert-->column-->% work complete. Should I change me global
template or something?

Please advise.

Pauline:

It sounds to me like you're confusing two very different values: % work
complete and % complete. The first is what its name implies, a percentage of
work. The latter refers to duration. You're in for a world of trouble if you
try to manipulate both values for a task as they force each other to change.

Gary,

Which one does MS Project Pro and Project Server use to be updated?
Honestly I don't care which one I use, I just want it to communicate
between the PWA and Project Pro. I have Pro communicating to PWA, but
not the other way.

Still Stumped,
Pauline

Pauline --

When you say "Resources tab," do you mean you added these resources as Users
in PWA? When you say you "opened the list via Project Pro," do you mean you
type the names of the resources on the Resource Sheet view? If you answered
yes to both of these questions, then you goofed up big-time. To correct
this problem, you will need to do the following:

1. Delete the hand-typed resources from each project and then save the
project
2. Open the Enterprise Resource Pool and add the resources to the pool
3. Save and close the Enterprise Resource Pool
4. Open each project and use the Build Team dialog to add the enterprise
resouces to the project
5. Save and publish the project

Let us know the answers to my two previous questions.

Dale,

I think we are getting a little off topic here. My resources are
selected via a drop-down list. My resources are enterprise resources.

I know there is a connection between project pro and pwa because I can
publish the schedule and the resource can see their tasks. The resource
can then make changes to the "% Work Complete" column in PWA - task
tab. They can also submit there updates, which are then sent to the PM.
As the PM, I can view the new updates, but when I click update and it
automatically opens Project Pro, the updates are not there.

Basically, changes can be published from Project Pro, but not updated
to Project Pro. Do you have any ideas on why this could be?

All:

As I've said before I have seen this issue come up a lot in this forum.
There was one thread that provided the solution: Thanks, Will, whoever
you are!

If you choose to update with "% Work Complete", you must insert the
"Remaining Work" column into your task view.

Yes, something so simple yet it can be overlooked! I hope this helps
anyone else who is running into this problem.

Also: Dale and Gary, I appreciate your efforts on helping with this
issue.
