PLEASE help with strange Office/Word 97 error

I have installed Office 97 on a user's new machine which
is running Windows XP Pro (yes it was at their request).
Now it seems that Word is unable to edit, save, or print
any of the files that I transfered to the new system.
when the user tries to make a change Word crashes and
brings up the Error Reporting Tool which is not muuch
help.

I have checked to make sure that the files are not marked
read only, and they are not. The machine has an 80GB
drive with 80% free so this is not the problem. It also
has 1GB or RAM and the documents are realatively small so
I don't think this is it either. I have updated/patched
Windows XP to the most current level.

ANY thoughts would be greatly appreciated. . .

I suggest you visit Micrsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/) and check out
the Word 97 patches and updates, especially for XP, and install them? They
would not be on the 97 CD and as you don't mention it, this is probably
where the trouble lies.

Also, be absolutely certain all open programmes are shut down when you
install Office97 The symptons sound a bit like corrupt files.

Good luck,

Ed

THANKS!! I will give this a try. There is one more
strange thing going on and that is Access 97 refuses to
run and complains that there is no license available for
it??? Have you heard of this before? It is on the same
machine.

This crops up quite often for some reason. I had it myself and did a Custom
installation of 97 selecting only Access. This cured it.

If you don't get any joy with this, JR, come back. There's a font problem,
(yes - font!) but I can only give the remedy for XP after I try it myself. I
know it works for Win 98.
