PLEASE HELP: Word (and Excel) won't work!

Windows98SE crashed and I had to reinstall it. Office XP was still there but
not functioning, so I reinstalled from the CD over my previous version
because I wanted to keep my settings. I don't use Access. Powerpoint is
fine. Excel is having major problems, but I'll post to an Excel group Word
works, but each time I bring it up, I see a Windows Install screen come up
for a few seconds. What's causing this? If I need to uninstall Office and
reinstall it, is there a way to save the settings? And could you give me
detailed instructions about what I need to do besides Add/Remove Programs.
Anything in the Registry? Thanks. I'm really desperate at this point!

I didn't understand how to log on as an administrator, but I went to the web
site below from Microsoft and saved my settings, uninstalled, then
reinstalled OfficeXP. All of my settings are there and everything seems to
be working well! My question now is, when I used the My Settings Wizard, I
saved a file called New Settings File.OPS. Did the saved settings
automatically get transferred to the reinstall from that file? Can I now
delete that file? Thanks.
