I am trying to put page numbers on a long document. The
first two pages are an index so I want the page numbers

And note that what you have at the beginning is a "table of contents," not
an "index." If you search Word's Help for information on how to create an
index, you will come up with something quite different from what you want.

Open your long document.....
click View and click on Header and footers.
If you have page numbers on First two pages then select
them and remove from both the pages.
Come down to the page from where you want to start your
numbering ......Now you see that numbering starts from
1 , 2...... so on till your last page.

If this helps you out please send me reply on my above
email address.

Have a Nice Day....
