Good day all,
Just hoping several of the regular responders to this
newsgroup can assist me in testing/confirming and then
hopefully explaining something.
I am working with MS Project 2002 - SP1 on Windows XP SP-
1 and have also tested on Project 2002 - SP1 on Windows
2000 Professional.
I stumbled across some very unusual behavior in Project
the other day when assigning multiple resources to a
task. The steps I followed are below:
Create new project - use Standard calendar without
modification.
Create an effort-driven, fixed unit task with any
duration desired. No task calendars applied.
Create 2 resources and set their maximum units to less
than 100%. Use Standard calendar as their base calendar
with no modifications to their resource calendar.
From the Gantt Chart View split the screen to show the
task form at the bottom. In the task form select the
first resource's name and enter a work value. Do not
click on OK to assign the resource. Select the second
resource's name and enter a work value.
When I click OK to assign both resources, Project enters
the maximum units for the first resource as expected, but
sets 100% units for the second resource - causing an
overallocation. The duration is recalculated as expected.
I have tested this in Project 98 as well as Project
2003. In both 98 and 2003 Project assigned the maximum
units for each resource and used the Units and Work to
recalculate the task duration.
Please let me know if you can reproduce this behavior and
most importantly if you can explain why Project is
overallocating a resource.
Thanks very much,
Julie
