I believe it is (a) smaller and (b) not supported by older browsers (if
you're using it in a Web page).

Correct. Png is generally an excellent format, but only relatively newer
(E.g. IE5 class) browsers support it. However, IE5 has been out for quite a
few years now.

PNG is a grphic format for takeing screenshots and for
computer generated images. JPEG is for natural pictures
If you JPEG-compress screenshots it will unnecesary reduce
their quality
