How does the png graphics format compare to jpg and tif? What are the
benefits of png?

Correct. Png is generally an excellent format, but only relatively newer
(E.g. IE5 class) browsers support it. However, IE5 has been out for quite a
few years now.

Isn't PNG lossless compression? I've never found it to make the file size
anywhere near as small as JPEG (lossy compression).

PNG is a grphic format for takeing screenshots and for
computer generated images. JPEG is for natural pictures

If you JPEG-compress screenshots it will unnecesary reduce
their quality
