PNG Image Problems

Peter L Kessler

Hi

I've just upgraded to Win XP Pro and Office 2002 after using Win 2000 and
Office 97 for some time. In my company letters I load a PNG image file with
the company logo. The PNG is a set of images on a transparent background.

In the past the transparency has always stayed that way when the image was
imported into Word, but in Word 2002, the transparency appears as a solid
black. I've tried importing other images in other formats which have
transparent area, with much the same reult. Can anyone tell me if there is a
new feature in Word which I have to switch off? It wouldn't surprise me. Any
help would be appreciated.

Best wishes

Try Tools, Options, Compatibility and check the Don't Blank the Area
Behind... option.

Hi Terry

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid it didn't work. I couldn't see
anything else in the list that would help, either.

I'm not sure what the problem is then. PNG images that I created and saved
in my WordXP documents look fine in W2003. (These are Visio XP charts that
were saved as PNG and then inserted in WordXP documents.) How were your PNG
logos created?

Hi Terry

I created the PNGs through PhotoShop 6. They still look okay there, will
full transparency. I get the same black background in the standard Windows
XP image viewer. Could it be a poor Windows install instead of Word?

Does the document still print correctly? If so it is probably a screen
driver issue.

Hi Graham

I can't check how it prints at the moment but I will be plugging in a new
printer in the next day or so, so I will be sure to test this. To be honest,
I do have problems with my WinXP install. WinExplorer sometimes crashes with
lots of dll names mentioned in the technical details, so perhaps this
problem is linked to that. I will let you know how the print comes out.

Do you have a printer driver installed? If you have the Generic/Text Only
printer selected, that might account for poor image quality.

Hi

Well I installed a brand new printer to my system yesterday and it prints
out the image the same way as it displays in Word - with a black background
instead of a transparent one.

This is the first printer to be installed to this system so there wasn't one
present at all before.

It has to be the system or Word itself which is causing this problem. I
created the PNG image on a Win2000/Word97 PC with PhotoShop 6 and it was
absolutely fine. I also installed it for use on a Win95/Word97 PC and it was
okay there. The problem must be with this system...I think.

If you want to send me a copy of your png file, I will have a look at it, as
I can't recreate the problem with pngs I create myself. Post to my e-mail
address, not the group.
