PNG problems in MS Paint & Imaging

In Word2000 as well as in WordXP .png is declared as a legal extension in
Office. However neigther Paint nor Imaging accept those files for Open/Save
(The OCR & Scanning function are both using Imaging only). The filter is in
place, the Registri´es are both unclear (they are different in describing).
Maybe I´ve overlooked something to be done?
