pointer disappears behind writing but visible in margins

When using word the pointer (arrow) disappears when it is over text but is
visible in the margins or the non text/ ' paper' area of the screen. This is
Word 2007 on a laptop using the touch pad. It started recently so I assume I
have changed something but don't know what . Any suggestions gratefully
recieved.
