Poll: Ease of Upgrading to Office 2003

George

Am using Outlook 2002 (XP) on a WinXP PC.

Just ordered the new MS Office 2003 Professional with Outlook 2003 including
Business Contact Manager (BCM).

Would like to know user experiences...is the upgrade fast and and painless?
Are there any "watch out for's" or any files I need to save as backups (like
outlook.pst) in case it fails and dumps everything?

Thanks,
George

On installing any new software you should always backup your system
"in case it fails and dumps everything?

First rule of installing anything - back up your important files.

After that, the upgrade is painless. You may have to install the Outlook
Address Book service however.

George: Just read your question. I too am about to order Office 2003. Getting new laptop with XP. Would like to know if you encounter any difficulties - if you don't mind letting me know. Trying to figure if an upgrade will do me - have no discs - lost in move - or if I have to purchase the whole version to get the "whole" program. I'd like to know if you have any problems. Thanks.

If you haven't got the "qualifying" software and crash the system you
won't be able to reinstall. Either get replacement discs for the
"qualifying" software or buy the retail version. Otherwise you will be
VERY unhappy sometime in the future.

Thanks,

1) on backing up important files... would that mean certain files (wondered
which ones) or a whole c:\ folder (which one)?

2) On installing the address book service... is that something that a)
appears as a "do you want to install it yes/no" during the upgrade, b) is
some kind of file.exe that is on the CD-ROM that you install only if
something doesn't work, or c) is a thing you have to go to microsoft.com and
download and also get the instructions on how to know when you need it and
how to install it.

Thanks,
George

What do you consider important? For me it is mail (.pst file for Outlook)
and documents (usually kept in My Documents), Quicken Data (.qif) and
favorites.

As for the Outlook Address Book service, if you don't get your contacts to
show when pressing the To: in a new message, then the address book service
is not installed or did not survive the upgrade. To install the service,
open Outlook - Tools->Email Accounts->directories->View or change. If it is
not there, back up one step and select add. Follow the prompts and you
should be fine.
