Poll: Ease of Upgrading to Outlook 2003?

G

George

Am using Outlook 2002 (XP) on a WinXP PC. Just ordered the new MS Office
2003 Professional with Outlook 2003 including Business Contact Manager BCM.

Would like to know user experiences...is the upgrade fast and and painless?
Are there any files I need to save as backups (like outlook.pst) in case it
fails and dumps everything?

Thanks,
George

Hello George,

I just did it. It took about 10 minutes going from
office pro 2002 to 2003. 2003 is not a trivial upgrade
as far as the user interface goes. It looks very
different.

The only gotcha that I've run into, and it probably isn't
an issue for most people is that I had folders under my
contact folders, and they are gone.

Sincerely,

Tom

Interestingly I just did this upgrade on our W2003 Terminal Servers, which
I've set to use the classic windows interface, and Outlook 2003 is almost
indistinguishable from Outlook 2002.

I've noticed the same on XP as well

It appears that 2003 changes the way it looks to match Windows, whereas
Outlook 2002 always looks the same.

I'm about to upgrade to Outlook 2003, as well.

Does anyone know of a work-around for what Tom experienced? I have a folder
under Contacts that I use as my regular address book for email and I want to
keep that as is. Any suggestions?

Without knowing what the OP means by "gone" - there is nothing we can offer.

If the OP means "gone" as in the address book is not available, then you
need to right click on each of your contact folders and select properties,
then check the Outlook Address Book tab to ensure that they are each mail
enabled. If the OP means they did not migrate, then you will want to make a
copy of your .pst file for backup purposes and then do the upgrade.

Upgrading never removes your data, but you may have some issues if you are
upgrading an IMO installation of 2000 to 2003.

Tom,

Were the folders you hand under CONTACTS due to using a Palm and maybe
Chapura Palm-to-Outlook sync'ing software?

If so, I may have same situation and it wouldn't be trivial to just "not
worry" about it. Would welcome anyone's insights on any special treatment
required in a Palm-to-Outlook sync situation, if this is related to the gone
CONTACTS sub-folders

Thanks,
George

Please disregard the above. I upgraded from Outlook 2002 to 2003 and
experienced no problems whatsoever.
