Poor PWA performance - to be or not to be

The project server is a Dell PowerEdge 2650 with two Intel Pentium 4 Xeon 3
GHz processors, 2 GB memory and a Dell RAID-kontroller with RAID-1
configuration on the system disk. The OS is Windows Server 2003 Standard. It
runs Project Server 2003 SP1.

The database server is a Dell PowerEdge 6450 with four Intel Pentium 3 Xeon
700 MHz processors, 2 GB memory and connected to a Dell/EMC SAN. The OS is
Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4. It runs SQL Server 2000 SP3.

The two servers are connected by a Cisco gigabit switch, and the client
computers are connected using 100 Mbit switches.

We have run performance monitors on the two servers for a couple of days
without finding any bottlenecks. The project server in particular hardly
shows any load at all during the day. We are also monitoring the network
traffic on the Gbit switch without finding any spikes in traffic that would
indicate a problem.

We have installed Project Server service pack 1, Project client service pack
1 and installed the hotfix 840377. According to the project managers the
speed of the Web Access increased slightly after this was done, but not
enough to make the system usable.

The problem is only there when we access the PWA - either through
PProfessional or through IE. PProfessional opens the project in no time, but
PWA is so slow (takes 15 second before it displays the page) that we are not
sure whether we can implement the EPM solution for project management in our
organization.

There should be no need for installing another Project Server with the View
Session Service by itself as far as we can see, since the HW is more than
good enough and the amount of users are only 150. (30 PPro, 120 PWA)

There are only 10 projects in the database for testing purposes and there
are about 15 simple textbased enterprise custom codes (RBS and a few on
Project level)

We have used the SetTracing Utility in the Resource Kit to activate logging
of program errors. These two events keep occuring every 30 minutes in the
Event Viewer application log:

Component: PjSvrNPE
File: C:\Office\dev\project\WebClient\source\utility\pjrecordsetutil.cpp
Line: 105
Error Number: 0x800a0e78

included.

But are these connected to the problem? What do we do to investigate further?

Alexander,

Have you looked into the possibility of name resolution or network problems or issues? What kinds of tests have you run to isolate the problems? Performance monitors are Ok to see what's happening on the hosting machines but they don't tell the whole story. I'd go to the network guys and ask for some help from them doing some sniffing/tracing on the network routes.
