POP email PROBLEM

B

BobS

I have a puzzling problem with outlook on a workstation at a clients office.
POP email will not work on one machine. The environment is Windows XP Home
Edition and Microsoft Office XP SBE. All service packs have been installed
for both along with most updates. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
Outlook, and the entrire Office Suite. I have deleted the account and
reinstalled it within Outlook. I continue to get a message that both the
POP and the SMTP server can not be reached.

The Internet works fine, and I can set up the same account in Outlook
Express and it works fine. I can also move the account to a different
computer and it works fine. It is a peer-to-peer network so there is not an
issue with a messed up roaming profile getting loaded from the DC.

Any clues out there? I'm stumped right now.

Here are a few questions that might shed some light on your problem:
- Can you ping the two servers?
- Can you telnet the POP server on port 110?
- Can you telnet the SMTP server on port 25?
- Did your ISP instruct you to use an SMTP port other than 25, e.g. 587?
- Have you run any tests with *all* firewalls turned off?

Sounds like a mail-profile problem. Please look if you have only one,
and the right one ...
