POP. IMAP4, or Exchange

I want to allow access for mail retrieval frm the outside world. What is the
best client protocol to implement? How does POP work with Exchange? - Does
it delete the messages from the server after retrieval? If so, how would I
prevent this? I've been playing around with IMAP4 however; I think the users
are more in tune with how Outlook works with POP or Exchange. I don't think
I can implement the Exchange client through the firewall though.
