pop up message in word 97

I'm having a problem with word since I loaded it onto my
laptop which is running xp. When I open a document a
window pops up with the message, "File is being used by
(my name). Would you like to make a copy of the file."
It's drilving me to distraction. I can't solve this
problem. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
file association needs to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
