pop up messages.

I am new to xp and a relative computer novice. I am receiving annoying pop
up messages when on line. I imagined this would be something microsoft would
have addresssed so I have downloaded most of the xp updates but not solved
the problem.
Some of the pop ups are cheekily asking me to purchase software to stop the
very messages they are sending!
Can anyone help?
Regards, Bill

This is a Microsoft Access database group, so help for your problem will be
limited. I can tell you that you probably click and downloaded some kind of
junk software like Gator or Hotbar that does this sort of thing.

Try and associate a name with the program that causes this, then use
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to uninstall it. You can get more
help on this in one of the Windows or Internet Explorer newsgroups.

This really isn't the right news group for this but these programs can be a
major pain so...I use
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/ ad-aware from lavasoft (free
version) to detect and eliminate spyware which should be really be called a
a virus. This sure makes it easy to get rid of those spyware programs that
are hard to find. I also use (and yes it's expensive but worth it)
Symantec internet security which includes both a firewall and antivirus. The
firewall kills popups. No, this isn't an advertisement, just a suggestion.

Are the pop-up messages in a box that appears with only
the option of selecting OK and include a web address as
part of the text? If they are then there's a fairly easy
way of stopping them and the cause is not malicious
software that you may have picked up.
