pop up spam

I have been experiencing continual pop ups from "messenger service" trying
to sell pop up filters. The ads say windows xp is responsible on one ad and
another states it's legal and there's nothing we can do except be held
hostage to buy a filter.

Any ideas?

The ad's are balderdash. Simply disable the messenger in XP.

Im not 100% sure, but I think it's either;

Start > Run and type;

"stop messenger"

or

"messenger stop"
